Rookie Days: My First Steps in the Industry

My journey as a server/waitress started 15 years ago when I was fresh out of high school. I wouldn’t say I had a burning passion for the job, but I needed a paycheck, and the restaurant was hiring. I started as a rookie server, not knowing what to expect.

My first few shifts were tough. I was nervous, and the menu seemed like a foreign language. But I was determined to learn. Every day, I would come in early, study the menu, and observe the experienced servers. I learned how to greet guests, take orders, and memorize the menu. It wasn’t easy, but I was getting the hang of it.

The Middle Years: Finding my Style and Confidence

After a year or so, I started to feel more comfortable in my role. I had developed a rhythm and found my style. I had also become more confident in my ability to handle difficult guests and tricky situations. I started to enjoy the job and the people I worked with.

I was promoted to a senior server, which gave me more responsibility. I was in charge of training new servers, and I loved passing on my knowledge to others. This gave me a sense of pride and purpose.

Becoming a Pro: 15 Years of Experience

After 15 years in the industry, I can say that I am a pro. I have encountered every type of guest, handled every type of situation, and have become a master at reading people. I have seen the industry change and adapt to new technologies and trends.

I have also learned that the key to success in this industry is not just being good at your job, but also having a positive attitude, being a team player, and treating guests with respect and kindness. These are the qualities that make a memorable server and keep guests coming back.

Looking back on my journey, I am grateful for the experiences and lessons I have learned. I never thought that a job I took to pay the bills would turn into a career that I love. I am proud to be a server/waitress and am excited to see where my journey will take me next.
